True Catalyst Flex + Intermediate Pro Goalie Leg Pads
Goalies Plus has developed a unique pad with True for 2026 called the Catalyst Flex +. The Flex + is based off the Catalyst 7X6 model however with a more flexible core. It was our goal to get this core that would allow the customer who wants a True pad but can’t because the pad is just too stiff for their needs. We added a double break to the core of the pad to allow for more vertical and lateral flex (twisting flex). The main reason we choose this route was based on the analytics we received from multiple manufactures. Manufactures reported that about 85-90 percent of their pro goalies would choose a stiff core. On the flip side they noticed that 85-90 percent of retail customers preferred a softer core. This would make sense as many pro goalies are on the taller side and obviously have an insane skill level. The retail customer may not be as tall or skilled and need something more forgiving; therefore, they preferred a softer core. We felt that bring a more flexible True pad out would enable more goalies to experience the True brand without the stiffness issue it presents to some customers.
The softer core we feel is very important for a smaller and young goalie. This the age group that needs to develop and learn to move the most. If a pad is too stiff, the goalie will not be able to move as they will be completely bound up by their own gear. The double break allows for increased flexibility and greater lateral flex (more independent flexibility of the pad – top, middle and bottom). By having more lateral flex in the pads, the goalie has greater control and more natural movements compared to a stiffer version. Another reason we went with the double break was the increase coverage in the butterfly technique. A hybrid goalie considers themselves a hybrid for many reasons, size, mobility, body limitations, etc. A very common characteristic of a hybrid goalie is a narrow to medium width butterfly technique. Since a hybrid goalie will still utilize the butterfly technique, it is important that the pad can do its part. By having the double break on the pads, even a narrow width goalie can still perform a butterfly technique with full closure. Without the additional break in the pad, there is a possibility that the hybrid goalie will leave a gap in their five-hole because the pads will not wrap around enough and seal the five-hole area.
The Catalyst Plus + Intermediate pad is an amazing 3.7 pounds per pad. This is incredible light for a goalie. The pad width is ten inches wide for a 29+2 and 30+2. The 31+2 is 10.25 inches wide. These are a bit on the narrower side for an intermediate pad but again provides maximum mobility for a young goalie. Combining the flex design, weight and width, this pad will be extremely popular with an active, mobile – hybrid goalie.
The True inner edge of the True Catalyst Flex + will have the Diamond Glide material except on the Sport Gold Saros colorway. The Diamond Glide was not available in Sport Gold for this series so that pad will have a weave inner edge. The Diamond Glide & Weave edge increases slide-ability in the butterfly technique.
On the backside of the pad, the Catalyst Flex + uses a nylon knee and leg channel. This helps maximize pad rotation in and out of the various butterfly techniques. The knee channel also has a wide design to accommodate various goalie knee guards.
The True Catalyst Flex + pads were designed to maximize the benefits of having a superior boot flex, resulting in enhanced mobility and control for all different game situations. Patent-pending Fast Rotation System (FRS) located at the calf keeps the leg connected to the pad. FRS makes them incredibly responsive without compromising rotation when dropping to the ice. The boot area of the Catalyst Flex + will use a soft boot for maximum ankle mobility. This has been the preferred boot of almost all pros for the past few years. angle which again provides the flex in the boot that the hybrid goalie wants.
In the toe area, this pad will come with a bungee Toe Tie. The bungee has been a popular choice for over a decade, but almost all pros and high-end goalies have gone back to a skate lace option. This is because the bungee does not provide the strength needed to properly push off the post when a goalie is in a reverse VH position. The bungee flexes and stretches too much when a goalie tries to push off the post (toe of the skate and pad straddle the post) while in the reverse VH technique. The skate lace on the other hand is very rigid and in the same pushing motion, it will create way more power compared to a bungee. If a goalie wants to change to a skate lace option, it is very easy and very inexpensive.
